انسانهای عصر سنگ چه سبکبار بودند!
جای زمین را تنگ نکردند
آمدند و رفتند
و دست طبیعت
پرونده‌ی آنها را بست:
لاشه‌هاشان را به کرکسها داد,
سرودهاشان را در باد پراکند
و گذاشت تا نوازشِ آرامِ رود
یاد آنها را با خود
به دریاهای بزرگ ببرد.
اما به ما بنگر:
امروز کشوهای میزم را خالی کردم
از نامه‌های تامین اجتماعی
تا فرمهای تقاضای کار,
از دعوتنامه‌هایی که درها را بروی من گشودند
تا ردنامه‌هایی که درها را بروی من بستند.
بیا سبک شویم
و جای زمین را باز کنیم
و چون غارنشینان
فروتن باشیم
و با عشقهامان
و شعرهامان
همراه برگهای درختان فروریزیم
و بگذاریم که زمین نفسی بکشد
و ما هم خود نفسی بکشیم.

Stone Age Humans

How light-hearted were stone age humans!
They did not take up too much space on the Earth.
They came and left
And the hand of nature
Closed their files:
It gave their corpses to vultures,
Spread their songs in the wind
And let the gentle caress of the river
Carry their memories
Into the great seas.
But look at us:
Today I emptied the drawers of my desk
From the letters of Social Security
To the forms of job applications,
From the invitations that opened the doors to me
To the rejections that closed the doors on me.
Let us become light
And open the space for the Earth
And become humble
Like cavemen,
And with our loves
And our poems
Fall alongside the leaves of trees,
And let the earth breathe
And we ourselves breathe too.
