Lonely Mariner

Majid Naficy

I no longer hear the sound of the sea
And have forgotten its color.
In vain I put my ear on the ground
To hear the galloping of seahorses.
The brave sailors have dismantled their sails
And children no longer ask about Sinbad the Sailor.
The Earth is alone under my feet,
Great wishes have left me
And outside my little window
Seabirds no longer screech.

I smell my hands
And stare at their interlaced lines.
Were not these fingers that in the past
Held flaxen ropes
To lead my boat
Toward a distant island
From where still comes
The sound of the dancing of my tribe?
