Thirty-Two Poems for Wendy

Twenty-Two.
Our Footprints in Maui

        By Majid Naficy

By now
Our footprints in Maui
Are all gone
Just like the Hawaiian alohas
Under the roar of American jets.

The specks of sand
After our morning swimming in the ocean,
The stains of wine
After our evening drinking on the balcony,
And the moans of love
After our never-ending kissing in the villa
Have all disappeared
Under the roar of a vacuum cleaner
The turns of a washing machine
And the shots of a stain remover.

What remains
Is the permanent coming and goings of waves,
The evanescence of sudden drizzles
And perhaps a giant sea turtle
Looking at our empty place
From behind boulders.
