Mango

By Majid Naficy

        For Azad

Your mangoes have ripened
And smell sweet.
I take one,
Slice it into pieces
And suddenly remember
That hot summer noon
When with your mother
We went to watch a Chinese dragon
And bought you a big mango
From a woman vendor.

She took out a mango from her cooler
Sliced it into pieces masterfully
Put them in a cup
And gave it to you
Revealing that you and I were both
Born on the year of the dragon.
From then on
You fell in love with mangoes.

I put the slices of your mango
One by one into my mouth
And then touch its big pit
Which looks like the heart of a dragon.
