The Sea does not Fit in Me Anymore

Majid Naficy


The sea does not fit in me anymore.
The angry waves overflow from the cracks of my body
And spill from my worn-out veins.
The dead fish float on the water
And an old, tired whale cries inside me.

Where is my whip
So that I can hit over the back of waters like King Xerxes?
Or if there is a Christ, tell him
To calm my angry sea with a prayer.

I kneel and call the god of sea:
Tell the waters return behind the seawalls
Tell the storm closes its eyes
Tell the fish come back to life
Tell my lonely whale
Finds its lost mate
Tell one becomes two.
Ashem Vohu.*
