For International Workers’ Day

Green Bough

Majid Naficy

        In Memory of Mostafa Abkashak*

From the tree
You slept under,
I picked a green bough.

“Keep my green bough.
One day I’ll return to Abadan
With the syndicate of workers
And need a flag.”

Dried leaves became your bed
And green branches your shelter
With your roots deep in the earth.

“Keep my green bough.
One day I’ll return to Iran
With the spring of freedom
And need a flag.”

        11 June, 1989

*-An exile Iranian workers’ activist who while driving on a freeway hit a tree and died on June 11, 1989 in Los Angeles.
