To the Children of Gaza and Ashkelon
To the Children of Gaza and Ashkelon

by Majid Naficy
My neighbor is going to Egypt
With her three grandchildren
Who were born here
Of a Palestinian father and an Israeli mother.
They want to visit the crocodiles of the Nile river
Who, everyday after lunch
Lie back on the pebbly shores
And leave their mouths open for hours
So their companion birds can clean
Their sharp teeth and gums,
And, before returning to the water,
Gently close their mouths
So as not to surprise
Their tooth-brushing plovers.
I panic from so much co-existence in nature
And unwillingly shout:
My neighbor! My fanciful neighbor!
Keep your grandchildren around your skirt
Lest the warring crocodiles
Roll their armored tanks
And the Iron-winged birds
Drop clusters of bombs
Over their heads.

The Banyan Tree in Lahaina
The Banyan Tree in Lahaina
Majid Naficy
Yesterday, the wild fire burned the 150-year-old banyan tree and killed dozens of people in Lahaina, Maui. Hence, I republish this poem to honor their memories. - M. N. August 10, 2023
I am that banyan tree
Which is not rooted in the ground
And yet, on its branches
A thousand well-tuned mynahs sing.
I am that banyan tree
Which is not rooted in the ground
And yet, under its shade
A thousand homeless dervishes sit.
I am that banyan tree
Which is not rooted in the ground
And yet, every night
The city sleeps beneath it
And wakes up every morning
To the call of its Mynahs.
I am that banyan tree
Which is not rooted in the ground
And yet, from each of its trunks
A thousand groves grow.
