We Are Aching

Majid Naficy

We are aching
In the confines of our homes
When the men in masks on the street
Are hiding for us.

The cars remain unwashed
The buildings unfinished
The strawberries unpicked.

Who will mow the lawns?
Who will put the babies to sleep?
Who will clean the elderly?

Our children no longer go to school
And our partners do not return home.
They are kept in prison
Or deported to faraway lands.

We must get out of our homes
And take back the streets
So that the city rises in one voice
Shouting the pain of its immigrants.
